Magic Monday – Robin Hood’s ZoomAlongAQuest!
Zip Zip Zoomers, what a week we had in Fairyland, it was whizbingling magic, there were pranks and japes and cakes and yummyness, oh and lots and lots of sparkles.
Now the Fairies have all flown away, so we are back with our footsies on terra firma, which is lucky because this week we are being invaded by outlaws. Robin Hood has messaged us from Sheriff Sneezy Pants of Nottingham’s Castle, where he is hiding. He is setting us all an Ode quest and he will join us in the lab. Huzzah!

What to do?
Host your own Ode Quest on Zoom. Make an invitation, send it out and ask your friends to share their own Odes, who’s is the funniest? Who’s is the silliest, and who’s makes you smile? Pick an Ode and share this week, here is what to do…
- Decide what date you want to have your game and what time
- Decide What video platform you will use (e.g Zoom, Skype etc)
- Decide who you want to invite to your Ode Quest and make a guest list.
- Decide what instructions you want to give your guest.
- Make your own invitation
- Send it out!
Remember, all you need is some paper and pens to make your own invitations. Make them lovely and colourful so that they stand out! Here’s Robin’s:
Zip-Zappie rhyming days, so this is ‘Host Your Own Ode Quest’ week.
I zooming wonder, what exactly is an ode? We decided to look this up in our big Boffinictionary. We discovered that an Ode is a lyrical poem, that was usually sung or declaimed, out loud.
Gosh, now we see what Robin wants us to do, write your own Ode, or find one that that tickles your fancy and makes you laugh like the Merry Outlaws do! What a heroic jolly week, this will be…
Make a hidey-den in your house!
Here’s some tips on how to make your own indoor den for you and your fellow outlaws to chill in!
KIT LIST:
You can actually make a den out of many different things. We suggest using a big cardboard box OR throwing a sheet over a clothes horse to create a den underneath. You could also put a sheet between two or three chairs. Make sure it’s big enough for all your outlaw pals to fit!
Kit your den out with cushions and blankets, to make it cosy.
Make sure to bring snacks in case you get peckish hiding out!
It might be dim and dark inside the den, so bring a torch. You can also try holding the torch under your chin to make your face all shadowy and spooky, whilst you tell a scaaaary story, or even shine the lamp at the wall and play shadow puppets with your hands!
Bring your favourite books and games into the den, so you never get bored whilst on the run from the Sheriff! Also, the den is a great place to start writing those Odes, so bring pencils and paper and get thinking…

Now we have a new Maker all ready in the Lab, introducing Isaac W-D, all the way from www.galaxytheatre.com
Isaac has flewed in to entertain the outlaws, so he has decided to show us all how to make cardboard puppets, so we can have our own storytelling show, how do we make them, just click on the link below …
KIT LIST:
- Sheet of cardboard
- Pritt stick
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Something straight (like a book spine, or ruler)
- Thumbtacks
- Googly eyes
- Pipe cleaner
- Sheet of felt
- Paint
- Lollysticks
HOW TO
- Take the cardboard, place the pritt stick lid in the middle, and draw around it with a pencil to make a wee circle.
- Take the straight thingy, and use it to draw a horizontal line under the circle. Then draw an hourglass shape, this line being the top edge.
- Draw a small rectangle, cut it out, and use it as a stencil to draw seven more identical rectangles, and cut these out too.
- Cut out the hourglass and the circle.
- Glue the circle to the hourglass to make the head and body.
- Use a thumbtack to attach a rectangle (arm) to the front of the body. Repeat this to extend the arm, and repeat again for the other arm.
- Do the same for the legs.
- Start decorating! Glue googly eyes onto the face, draw clothes with buttons on the body, and draw a smile on the face.
- Cut a pipe cleaner into little pieces, and glue them on the arms to make fingers.
- Cut out the hair from the felt, in whatever style you like.
- Cut some ovals out of felt, and glue them to the bottom of the legs, for shoes.
- Paint the puppet’s clothes, whatever colours you like.
- When the paint’s dry, take a lolly stick and glue it to the back of the puppet. Do the same for the arms. Once the glue is dry, your puppet is ready to play!
Zippedy wordings, Maid Marion has made us all a word search, to get our brainboxes word-tingling, ready steady go!
Hiding Merry Men!
Here’s a funtastic game for playing in a group, in a big open space.
- One player is picked to be the Sheriff of Nottingham. All the other players are the Merry Men, who must lie down on the floor.
- The Merry Men have to stay still and silent.
- The Sheriff’s aim is to make the Merry Men move, or make a sound. If any do, they have been captured by the Sheriff and must join his team and try and catch more Men out.
- The Sheriff isn’t allowed to touch any Merry Men, but he is allowed to get close and tell jokes or make silly sounds to make them laugh.
Did you know…
Another famous outlaw was Dick Turpin, who was a highwayman! This meant he would hold up carriages at gunpoint in the woods, and say “Your money or your life!” so that his victims would hand over their cash and Dick would scarper off with it.
Once, Dick Turpin even attempted to rob a guy who turned out to be a fellow highwayman! They ended up becoming friends and teaming up to thieve together. What a couple of rascals…
If you’d like to hear more about that rogue Dick Turpin, tune into our story this week to hear about how he started out as a highwayman. Part Two on Friday!
What a curious day this Magic Monday has been, we are going to be zoomingly busy with wordings and rhymings and all sorts.
So zoomers, we Boffins are off to sharpen our penscules, and guess what, Robin has arrived. Now as long as we can stop him riding his horse indoors, this week will be zooming good fun. See you for more on Wacky Wednesday for a load more zipping outlawingly heroic happenings, toodles and Zip Zip!
🦌 Watch out, Zoomers! Only 11 sleeps til Xmas day. Rudolph is polishing up his nose ready to lead the sleigh!🦌
